One thing that has always astounded me is the fact that people are continuously going on about the shortage of women in technical degrees and jobs. However at the same time people don’t seem to be targeting the core problem, which is how girls are brought up.

From a young age we are shaping our kids in a number of ways, not just by what we say and how we act but also with the toys we provide them.  For example even though it is 2007 we are till traditionally giving girls dolls and home wear sets, and boys cars and action figures.

Even the big break through of creating “Lego for Girls” is a great disappointment as it is marketed as a dolls set, in a bight pink box:

What on earth is wrong with giving your little girl a traditional Lego set? Why does it need to be pink and some how involve dolls? The only reason girls like pink, fairies, dolls, princesses etc is because they are surrounded with them at birth and it is traditionally assumed that that is what they will like.

I mean I have nothing particularly against dolls, rather the sort of dolls we are promoting to children (Anorexic, flawless , beauty queens who own every possession desirable). Where are the Engineering barbies? The Mechanic Barbies? The Road Work Barbies? Where are the barbies who aren’t afraid to get dirty?

They don’t exist! and until we provide our girls with a “Balanced” view on play time and life we will continue to have a server lack of females in technical degrees.

Today marks the 75th birthday of the Sydney Harbour bridge and they are expecting more then 500,000 people to flood the bridge to celebrate.

Now maybe i have just spent way to much time in dynamics and mechanics lecture but this has got me wondering about the load limit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Now i do understand that this figure of 500,000 people will be the total figure of people walking the length of the bridge through out the course of the entire day rather then having the whole lot on there at once, however i want to know how many people we would need to have on the bridge for it to break.

http://static.flickr.com/68/153969699_98f38540f5.jpg

To begin my quest i had to find out a few facts about the bridge, so here they are:

Length of arch span 503 metres
Height of top of arch 134 metres about mean sea level
Height to top of aircraft beacon 141 metres above mean sea level
Width of deck 49 metres
Clearance for Shipping 49 metres
Height of Pylons 89 metre above mean sea level
Base of each abutment tower 68 metres across and 48 metres long (two pylons rest on each abutment tower)
Total length of bridge 1149 metres including approach spans
Bearing Pins Each of the four pins measures 4.2 metres long and 368 millimetres in diameter
Thrust on bearings Under maximum load approximately 20,000 tonnes on each bearing
Number of rivets Approximately 6,000,000
Largest rivet Weighed 3.5 kilograms and was 395 millimetres long
Longest Hanger 58.8 metres
Shortest Hanger 7.3 metres
Total weight of steelwork 52,800 tonnes including arch and mild steel approach spans
Weight of arch 39,000 tonnes
Rock excavated for foundations 122,000 cubic metres
Concrete used for bridge 95,000 cubic metres
Granite facing used on pylons & piers 17,000 cubic metres
Allowance for deck expansion 420 millimetres
Allowance for arch expansion The arch may rise or fall 18 centimetres due to heating or cooling
Number of panels in arch 28, each 18.28 metres wide
Record tonnage erected 589 tonnes of steelwork was erected on the arch in one day on 26 November 1929
Paint required 272,000 litres of paint were required to give the Bridge its initial three coats.

(Figures obtained from http://www.sydneyharbourbridge.info/)

From further research i found that when building the bridge the foundations on either side were willing to take 4 bearings each (correct me if this is wrong).

(This is an image of one of the Thrust Bearings)

So if each bearing can take a maximum of 20, 000 tonnes we are talking alot of people to make this bridge crack. We are also talking alot of math to work this out…

If i am serving you and not only ague with me regarding a clearly priced item, but you are bluntly rude, don’t say please and walk all over me like you are better then me i will shove a staple gun up your arse and staple a few tips regarding your manners, written on brightly coloured post-its, all through out your insides.

Got it?…

Sometimes i really wonder how certain doctors come to qualify and be allowed to practice. It has got to the point where going to the doctor is like a cash transaction at the bank, with an extremely long waiting time. Now days it seems when you are ill and you go to a doctor instead of checking you out and offering you valuable advice, or even just asking questions, certain doctors are simply taking your money in exchange for a medical certificate and some pain killers, no questions asked.

I cant vouch for anyone else but i tend to go to a doctor when i am ill and i want to be healthy again, not for a quick fix with painkillers or to just get “certification” that i was legitimately ill (even though the doctor didn’t check me out). So why is it so hard to find competent doctors to do their job properly?

I’m going to bed with some ice. If anyone can point me into the direction of a compitant doctor that would be much appreciated.

Ok people it is that time of year again, Thursday this week happens to be Eat A Tasty Animal For PETA Day, and I am pumped!

For anyone who doesn’t know who PETA is they are the People for Ethical Treatment of Animals. These are the people who have those wacky protests on animal rights (normally naked). Granted that the protesters tent to be young attractive European or American females however if you ever stop to talk to one of these girls you will soon find that there looks and there determination to save little fluffy things is really all they have. In fact I am pretty damn sure that the lack of meaty goodness in their diet has slowly killed the connections to their brains.

(mmm, grain  fed, them some nice cuts. I’ll take mine blue and kicking)

In fact I not only encourage people to participate in Eat a Tasty Animal for PETA Day I will suggest that EVERYONE check out this site.

So this Thursday dust off the gas cylinder, fire up the BBQ and cook up a meaty storm. I personally will be eating every animal available legally on the meat market, from A - Z… mmmmmm

And finally here’s a fantastic message to all those PETA extremists…

What is this country coming to? Aren’t we Australia, the land famous for meat pies with tomato sauce? All i can say is that i am ashamed, ashamed that it seams that you can no longer get free sauce with your pie. Not only that but the sauce you now get is in tiny one serve packets which contain more plastic then sauce and you are charged between 35c - 60c per sachet!!!

sauce

So what is the reason for this disgusting un-Australian charging for sauce when you buy food? The logical answer would be that the price of manufacturing sauce has increased considerable and this increase has been passed on to the consumer, well is this the case?

Funnily enough the only statistics i could find on tomato sauce prices was from California, so here it is:

Tomato sauce prices

As you can see from this graph the real price for tomato sauce has actually decreased since the nineties (the days of FREE sauce with food). In-fact it has gone from just under $17 (USD) per carton to just under $11 (USD) per carton that is a whopping 35% decrease from the earliest recorded price (1990). Australian figures may be slightly different to this and i will continue to search for them, but until then i will assume they are similar. So why is it that cafes and other places are now charging for sauce when the cost price has actually decreased?

My assumption is that it is a very sneaky way of getting in that little bit if extra dosh. I feel that it is simply a ploy to take advantage of us poor Australians who can not and will not eat their pie, sausage roll or chips without a smothering of that salty goodness we call tomato sauce. It is disgracefully that any business would take advantage of this weakness and charge for sauce when you are already buying their pie for $3 - $4 when you could really just duck into Coles, get a hot pie for $1 and buy a bottle of sauce.

So i am calling on all you sauce lovers, don’t fall for this revenue rasing scheme, boycot all places who insist on charging you for sauce when you buy food. Togerther we can win, together we can get back free sauce with food.

FREE SAUCE FOR ALL!!!
